Emerald Isle Paddleboarding

Emerald Isle Paddleboarding –

We headed to Emerald Isle to do some paddle boarding on a warm day in January. I use the word warm in a relative way; it was still 50 degrees, with a water temp in the 40’s. We piled our SUP’s into our truck and headed for Coast Guard Point. We had been in the water the previous day catching head high surf and had a great time. We decided to go back out for a mellow day because that’s just what we do. Anytime we can be on, or in the water, we are! We take advantage of where we live; those of you who vacation here will understand.

We drove out on the beach, which is an off-season privilege for anyone who wants to purchase a pass. It is well worth the money if you live near the Crystal Coast. With the beach pass you can find the best surf break. On this particular day, it took us a while to pick a spot because the surf was pretty small. The great thing about paddlesurfing is the fact that it does not require waves. If the waves are too small, then you can just go out and explore the wide-open ocean. After catching a few small waves, that is what we decided to do.

The water looked like a giant mirror, there was no wind at all. We saw some dolphins out playing in the distance and decided to go take a closer look. We paddled out slowly taking in everything around us. There were pelicans flying lazily through the air looking down at the water searching for food. As we slowly got closer to where the dolphins were playing in the water, they let us come within a few feet of them. We stopped paddling and just sat and watched these amazing mammals. They appeared to be working in teams to catch fish. They would surface in groups of three, or four right in front of us. Every once in a while, one would slap its tail on the water. We saw another jump clear out of the water about 3 feet into the air.

I’m not sure how long we stayed out there being a part of the Ocean. Time seemed to slow down and a peace stole over us, we knew why people came here to vacation. We are all connected to the water, whether we admit it or not. We passionately seek out this amazing resource in Coastal North Carolina. It’s our great honor to get the chance to show others this amazing sport. We take our collective experience and pass it along to others in a place called Broad Creek. Its just a short drive from Emerald Isle. If you haven’t been here, come and check us out. We rent paddleboards, Kayaks, and also do kiteboarding lessons. We would be happy to show you why we love the Crystal Coast. Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have. Email us at info@blownkiteboarding.com.
