2014 Ozone Catalyst Kiteboarding Kite
The all-new 2014 Ozone Catalyst kite is out and we thought we would give you our opinion on its performance. Having been impressed with the 2013 Catalyst, we were anxious to get out and test its performance. We wont keep you waiting; we were impressed with the kite. If you keep reading, you will find out why.
The first thing we noticed was the bag size. It is big enough to fit two kites if rolled properly. It is not designed to leave your struts inflated, but could work if you leave the struts exposed. Other non-performance things we noticed was the bar color did not change and the pump is the same. If this keeps the price down, we are all for it!
The 2014 color scheme is an improvement over the previous year. The kite looks great in the air, really grabbing your attention. Not only does it look good, it feels good in flight. To our great relief, it retains all of the flight characteristics of 2013.
The new Catalyst pulls hard from the center-lines giving it moderate to light bar pressure. It rides deep in the wind window creating a lot of low end pulling power. There are two problems normally associated with a kite that has low-end power. The first problem is when the wind picks up you get grossly overpowered. The second problem is they have a tendency to back-stall when you run at the kite.
The two points above is where the Catalyst stands out against other brands. This kite makes for a versatile wave and flat-water kite. It has enough low-end to create some power in loops and it has consistent power to do unhooked riding. It also excels in the surf, having the ability to drift. Where it does not drift you can quickly recover by the speed of the kite.
